Understanding Global Markets and Cultures is Key to Success

Welcome to the exciting world of global business at the Merage School.  As Director of International Programs, I invite you to tour our global business website and the portfolio of global business opportunities that await you at The Paul Merage School of Business.

As businesses seek more innovative ways to compete globally, the need for business leaders from both developed and developing economies has surged, leading to a rise in the demand for MBA professionals with global business knowledge.   To capture these emerging opportunities, the Merage School has for the last few decades created programs that bring together world-renowned faculty, cross-border research and international learning experiences that are the gateway to global business education.

Every year, we offer our students five international field trips (referred to as ‘residentials’) across three of our MBA programs. These residentials allow our MBA students to travel overseas and directly immerse themselves in the political, cultural and economic challenges that global executives face as they lead globally diversified organizations. To enable a broad range of international experiences, we have strategically targeted a wide cross-section of locations including  Belgium, Brazil, China, Chile, Hong Kong, Netherlands, Russia, South Korea, Vietnam, among other diverse and globally-connected countries. From local manufacturing plant site visits to executive board rooms, our students learn applicable and valuable lessons from C-level executives as well as trade and government representatives from on-the-ground sources. MBA students also have the opportunity to conduct ‘hands-on’ strategic projects for organizations that test their growing knowledge of global business practices and cultural norms.

In addition to the offsite MBA residentials, our MBA exchange program provides an extended experience for students who wish to engage with other countries on a longer-term basis with an affiliated university overseas.  MBA students can choose participating schools in the UC  Education Abroad Program (EAP) and other schools that collaborate with the Merage School.

Throughout our global business curriculum, research, residentials and the MBA exchange program, we provide our students the business education they need to lead their organizations through challenging economic times, and to take advantage of opportunities during periods of economic growth. This unique combination provides our MBA students with applicable insights into success beyond our borders. Importantly, our international program enables many of our students to obtain post-MBA positions at corporations overseas when they graduate.

At the Merage School, we strive to develop the next generation of business leaders who will make a significant contribution not only to their specific business sector, but to the world around them.  It is our hope that our continued efforts to broaden and enrich our students’ international experience will become a launching pad to this endeavor.
