Southern California produces more biomedical products and research than any other area in the world and accounts for 25% of all FDA medical product approvals.

Beckman Coulter is a leading manufacturer of biomedical testing instrument systems, tests and supplies that automate laboratory processes with annual sales of $2.5 billion. Orange County is home to other leading bio tech firms such as Allergan, Peregrine Pharmaceuticals, Cortex Pharmaceuticals, Edward Lifesciences, Braun Medical, Alcon Irvine Technology Center, and Advanced Medical Optics.

Broadcom is a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications with annual revenue of more than $2.5 billion. Google has a major location in Irvine through its purchase of dMarc Broadcasting (Google Audio). They also have a significant presence in the Tech Coast area through their other purchases of Applied Semantics, Picasa, Urchin Software and Neven Vision.

This Fortune 100 firm is the world’s largest technology distributor serving 165,000 resellers in 100 countries. Their success is representative of the role that international trade plays in Orange County’s thriving economy. The county’s total foreign exports exceed $16 billion annually with computers and electronics as the top category with over $5 billion worth of trade.

Mercedes Benz Advanced Design
Mercedes Benz’s first design studio outside of Germany reflects the fact that Southern  California has become the epicenter of automobile design.  Over 14 auto manufacturers have design studios in the area including CALTY (Toyota, Lexus, Scion) in Newport Beach as well as Ford’s Advanced Product Creation, Mazda Research, Kia America’s headquarters and Ford’s Premier Automotive Group headquarters all in Irvine.

Southern California is a hotbed for biomedical careers as it represents the largest concentration of medical product manufacturers in the world.

San Diego County has a well-deserved reputation for the best weather in the continental U.S.  The golf industry is also is attracted by the weather and is headquarters for major firms, including Callaway and Taylor Made. Callaway Golf is a leading manufacturer of golfing equipment under the Callaway, Odyssey, Ben Hogan and Top-Flite brands. Beyond golf, other sports equipment firms are located in the area including K2 Inc. - a leading manufacturer of premier branded equipment for sports as diverse as fishing, watersports, baseball, softball, alpine skiing, snowboarding and in-line skating.
