Class of 2008, Team 2 - UCI Paul Merage School of Business

What has made your team successful?

Cheryl Travagliani - UCI Paul Merage School of BusinessCheryl: We’ve been working together for two years. And it feels really good to say that we’re known for being a team. We represent our section often as a team and we all support each other.

Lowell: It’s been a really terrific process – we have all learned about each other and have become friends.

Hamaad: I think we have been successful as a team because we  collaborate with each other from the beginning of a project up to the end.

Heather: It also helps that we all get along really well!

Jon: It did take about two quarters for us to learn everybody’s strengths and weaknesses.

Cheryl: I also think we had a lot of open communication. We didn’t hold back with one another. These “soft” skills really helped us function as a team

Heather: But it was never personal – it was always about the task at hand.

How has this experience helped advance your career?

Hamaad Akmal - UCI Paul Merage School of BusinessCheryl: It’s been great because with every project, we rotated companies so that we diversified our learning across multiple industries.

Lowell: So, at this point, we’ve all done free consulting work for each other’s companies!

Jon: I’ve found that going through the program has given me a lot of visibility at my company.

Heather: That’s so true. Every time I work on a project for class, I have to present to senior staff at my company. They take it very seriously.

Hamaad: I know that my company values what we do here and that they believe we are doing something that can be helpful to the organization.

Heather King - UCI Paul Merage School of BusinessJon: I second that. Getting face-time with senior management can be difficult. But I’ve found that they want to help me out and see the results.

Cheryl: I’ve had three promotions at my company since I started the MBA program at Merage –the senior management team at my company know that I am getting my MBA from Merage. This experience has provided me with great exposure and high-level visibility.

Hamaad: All of us have had promotions since being in the program.

How have the faculty and staff helped you?

Lowell Kessel - UCI Paul Merage School of BusinessJon: I had a huge project at work and my professor Rick So really helped me out. He dedicated lots of his time to help me develop a multiple regression model. For a busy teacher to take time out like that – it went way beyond the scope of the class.

Lowell: One really great thing about the Merage School is definitely the staff. They are very helpful to the person who is a working professional.

Heather: All that that they do allows me to focus on learning and my time is spent on just that.

Cheryl: I love that they provide dinner for you before class. I thought I’d just go to school and come home – but we all have dinner together before class. It’s surprising how involved in the school I’ve become as a result of bonding with my fellow students.

Jon Nebot - UCI Paul Merage School of BusinessHamaad: I’d agree with Cheryl. It’s an experience coming to school, it’s not just going to class.

Jon: And the program provides you a number of opportunities to network. You can sit in on sessions with key note speakers and attend professional seminars. There is always a lot going on.

Heather: And I really like that the faculty comes to our socials.

Cheryl: They are as invested in the school as we are. They really care and it shows.
