October 22, 2014 11:45 AM to October 22, 2014 1:45 PM DLC Connections Lunch with Coach Mike Gillespie as Guest of Honor

Date:  Wed, Oct 22, 2014
Time:  Must arrive no later than 11:45 a.m. to be seated
Location:  Newkirk Pavilion, Anteater Stadium, UCI campus

More about Coach Mike Gillespie-  The fifth time was the charm for Mike Gillespie. After leading UC Irvine to five NCAA Tournament berths in seven years, the 2014 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Coach of the Year tacked on a fifth College World Series appearance to an already prominent coaching resume. It was the second post-season trip to Omaha, Nebraska for the Anteaters, who posted a 41-25 overall record, the fourth time a Gillespie-led team has reached the 40-win plateau. UCI toppled No. 1 Oregon State in regional action and followed that with a two-game sweep of Oklahoma State at the NCAA Super Regionals to reach the CWS. There the team handed Texas a 3-1 loss in the opening game before losing to Vanderbilt and the Longhorns to end the post-season run. At the end of the year, UCI was ranked in the top 10 in four polls with its highest rank of No. 6 by Collegiate Baseball.

Gillespie, an American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Famer, reached a personal milestone last year, collecting his 1000th career win early in the year. He boasts a Division I lifetime record of 1037-615-2 and is in the top 30 among active coaches with a .657 win percentage. As the Anteater manager, Gillespie has produced the program’s only two Big West Players of the Year with Taylor Sparks, the most recent honoree winning the award in 2013. Ben Orloff, who was UCI’s inaugural Big West Player of the Year in 2009, is now an assistant coach on Gillespie’s staff.

In 2013, UCI won 10 weekend series and posted a 25-9 record at home to improve to 126-46 at Anteater Ballpark during the Gillespie era. Seven players were voted to the all-conference teams, Sparks was named an ABCA Gold Glove winner and he and Morales combined for six All-America nods.

Gillespie and his wife, Barbara, have four children, Kelly, Mitch, Matt and Tiffany and have three grandchildren, Cade, Cole and Samantha.
