A Joy(stick) to Behold

Abstract:  Faced with a shortage of skilled machine operators, Caterpillar needed a grader that was easy to use -- without alienating old-timers.  While older models of the motor-grader construction vehicle had as many as 15 levers, a steering wheel and foot pedals, Caterpillar's latest version has two of the controls normally found on videogame consoles.

A half-page WSJ article that does a great job describing the objectives, challenges and process involved in designing a radically new user interface for a piece of construction equipment with very opinionated users.  It overviews the iterative product design and user testing which was utilized in the seven year redesign effort.
