The Venture Capital Investment Competition® held at UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School began in the middle of the technology bubble in 1998 as an educational event for MBAs to learn about venture funding. It is now in its 11th year and has evolved into a marketplace for entrepreneurs seeking investors and a training ground for future venture capitalists.
The VCIC® is not a business plan competition. Instead, students are given the role of an investor and are charged with the task of judging real business plans that are currently seeking venture capital funding. While these students judge sales pitches thrown by aspiring entrepreneurs, actual venture capitalists observe from the sidelines. After the entrepreneurs leave, the real competition begins. Each VCIC® team is given the task of convincing the VC judges that their investment decisions are sound and will produce a return on investment proportionate to the risk of the investment. Finally, after careful deliberation, the venture capitalist judges choose a winner based on each teams’ assessment of risk, knowledge of the VC process, communication and teamwork.
