The focused curriculum in Real Estate at The Paul Merage School of Business is intended to provide advanced Masters students, who have previously acquired competency through the completion of core MBA coursework, with the tools necessary to understand and pursue a successful career in the real estate industry.
Students first complete an introductory survey course exposing them to the workings of the real estate and housing markets, the proper structuring and analysis of real estate projects, and the operations of the various sectors of the industry. The introductory survey course is open to all Masters students as an elective.
Those students intending to focus on real estate will be required to select four additional elective courses, either from within the real estate program (at least two) or more broadly from a select list of courses across the MSB or the University, that allow them to study specific areas of interest in depth. Finally, students must complete a capstone seminar dealing with strategic management issues affecting the real estate enterprise.
The real estate curriculum is intended to be analytic, yet applied, and will be frequently supplemented with case studies, guest speakers from the real estate industry, and team projects analyzing real deals. A unique aspect of the program is the availability of a practicum, taught by Green Street Advisors, the preeminent independent research and consulting firm concentrating on REIT’s, which allows the students to manage a portfolio of publicly-traded real estate securities.
Students are encouraged to participate actively in the Real Estate Association, which hosts a series of industry professionals and sponsors field trips, to take advantage of the public and executive education programs sponsored by the Center for Real Estate, and to participate in an active Internship and Mentorship Program supported by the Members of the Advisory Board of the Center for Real Estate and the Southern California real estate community.
