 Peter Shea, Executive Vice President of J.F. Shea Co. Inc. and President of J.F. Shea Construction grew up in heavy construction, tunneling in particular, observing and learning from his father Edmund Shea and uncles Gil and Charlie Shea. Charlie was the Director of Construction and partner of the Six Companies responsible for the building of Hoover Dam. The J.F. Shea Co., Inc. has been a leader and innovator in the heavy construction industry in the United States for over a century. The Shea name is synonymous with tunnel construction in America for the past 50 years.
As President of the wholly owned subsidiary, J.F. Shea Construction, Inc. in addition to his other roles in the Shea organization. Peter focuses on tunnel, underground, pipeline and water resources infrastructure construction. He earned a degree in Business Administration from the University of California at Berkeley in 1957 and a second degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Southern California in 1960.
During the next several years from the late-60s to the early-70s, Peter worked as Project Manager for the 11-mile Sepulveda Pipeline project for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. In the late 1970’s, Peter was assigned overall management of heavy construction operations for the company with all Project Managers and District Managers reporting directly to him. J.F. Shea Co., Inc. consolidated its heavy construction operation and settled in Walnut, CA in 1970 where the corporate offices are presently located. In 2005, Peter received the Golden Beaver Award for Management.
Peter has served on various organizations serving both the construction industry and various community organizations. He has served as a former Director of AGC of California, Director of the Beavers, Trustee for the University of California Berkeley Foundation, and Member of the University of California Berkeley Business School Advisory Board. Peter currently serves on the Board of Directors of the University of California, Irvine Graduate School of Management.
His career in construction has been exciting, challenging and rewarding. He continues to enjoy the interpersonal reaction with the managers, engineers, mechanics, electricians, walking bosses, equipment operators and miners that comprise the backbone of the organization. His son, Peter O. Shea Jr., is now the President and CEO of J.F. Shea Co., Inc.as the Company transitions to the “Fourth Generation” of a family owned and operated enterprise.
Peter and his wife of 41 years, Carolyn, also have two daughters, Catherine and Sally. The couple looks forward to keeping up with their eight grandchildren. Peter enjoys golf, hunting and is looking forward to his continued involvement in the heavy construction industry.
