The Mission


The UC Irvine, Center for Investment and Wealth Managment's Financial Literacy Summer Residential Program is a one-week, on-campus program dedicated to helping underserved 8th and 9th grade students by teaching life skills in money and investment management in a highly supportive environment.  Our mission is to instill a continued desire to strengthen understanding of financial matters, encourage admission into a four-year college or university, and to inspire confidence and success in all areas of life.

This program is at no cost to the student and is completely funded by the Center and its sponsors.

The Program


Classroom speakers and workshops are augmented by field trips, corporate visits and cultural events highlighting the college experience.  The curriculum includes:

  • Budgeting: Making the Most of Your Money
  • Good Debt, Bad Debt: Using Credit Wisely
  • Stocks and Bonds: What is the Difference and What Does it Mean to Own Them
  • Your Money: Keeping it Safe (Banking, Savings, Checking, Investment Accounts)
  • Doing Good: The Responsibility of Paying it Forward
  • College: What You Need to Do Between Now and Then, and How to Pay For It
  • Consumer Awareness: The Influence of Advertising
  • Healthy Habits: Having the Right Relationship With Money
  • Creating Your Personal Brand
  • Career Panel
  • Group Presentations
Field trips and extra-curricular activities include:

  • Visits to the headquarters of Taco Bell, Charles Schwab and PIMCO
  • Visit to the Santa Ana Court House and meeting with 2 prominent Judges in chambers
  • Skills for Success with Women Helping Women / Men 2 Work
  • Self Defense and Martial Arts
  • Boomers
  • Ropes Course
  • Meet and Practice with a UC Irvine Collegiate Team
 
The 2013 program will take place August 4-10 for young women. Applications are due by May 1, 2013, and can be downloaded here.
