Our Purpose
The purpose of The John & Marilyn Long U.S.- China Institute for Business and Law is three-fold.
The primary purpose of The John & Marilyn Long U.S.- China Institute for Business and Law is to promote links and synergies between the two countries on business research and educational fronts. This will help to create an open platform whereby Chinese and Americans can connect, share ideas, and foster fuller understanding of key economic and business issues that confront them. Given the paramount importance of the U.S.-China relationship and the viability of global business development that would be affected by trade rifts and economic barriers, it seems most desirable to put into place a durable research mechanism in developing in-depth analysis and compelling solutions to business-specific problems.
Secondly, the Long U.S.- China Institute exists to advance research efforts within and among universities. Academic interest in U.S.-China economic and business relations is increasing, yet progress in developing a coherent and visible presence is much weaker and still not a top priority within most American universities. According to a study performed by the Global Window Program at UCLA, very few university-affiliated research centers focus their studies on contemporary U.S.- China economic business relations.
Lastly, the Long U.S.- China Institute also represents an opportunity for the University of California to be at the leading edge of study of U.S.-China commercial relations. The University of California has long been recognized for its cutting-edge research in industry, for its strength in the field of economics and management, and for its concentration on Pacific Rim countries. The Long Institute brings together scholars and business practitioners from both the United States and Greater China to prepare the University for an expanded role in addressing applicable research and policy topics.
