Andy's Insider Update
Andy’s Insider Update Have you ever wondered "what a business school dean really does?" Here are a few projects Andy has in the works.

Each year we always re-evaluate our vision, mission, priorities and financial strategy. We also review our product line analysis and update our progress on key initiatives. We then discuss these items carefully with our faculty, staff, and Dean's Advisory Board. As part of this process, I am currently working on the continued development and approval of three new degrees for the school, the Master of Science in Engineering Management, the Master of Science in Biotechnology Management and the joint JD/MBA program.

We are also meeting with companies on our newest thrust which combines elements of innovation and sustainability. Our major conference on sustainability will take place in March and the Steering Committee is currently in the process of confirming a group of very high-level speakers for the conference. Stay tuned.

Several of you have asked about our plan, knowing that the Anderson School at UCLA has developed a plan to privatize. At this point, while we are essentially private; that is, we receive very little money from the State, we are not aggressively pursuing a formal move to privatization. Given the numerous interactions that the Merage School has with our campus, privatizing is not a path we are pursuing. Our joint programs with Engineering, Law, Medicine (MD/MBA) and our new undergraduate major are so integrally tied to the campus that we always want to be recognized as a key component of this top university. There are many other areas of the school that I am focused on including expanding executive education, funding a new building, appointing key program directors, analyzing our alumni strategy, broadening our corporate relations strategy and working on our brand and marketing strategy.

Outside the School, I continue to serve as Chair of AACSB International until April. AACSB is heavily engaged in a review of its standards, developing new products for the emerging 10,000 business programs throughout the world and leading initiatives in new areas for business schools. Ten years ago I chaired the AACSB Blue Ribbon Committee that established the standards that govern accreditation for the 600 accredited schools globally of which the Merage School is one. It is time to review and modify the standards once again and they have asked me to chair this committee one more time. While I am honored, I have had to turn down the offer; the Merage School needs my time and attention for the next phase of our development and this task would require too much time away from the School. However, I will serve as a member of the Committee which allows me to participate by phone.

I send my thanks to each and every one of you for engaging in your school so passionately. The next phase of our development will only be successful if our alumni and external network provide the channels of that success.

Must Read Book Review
The Forgotten Man by Amity Shlaes
Comments: Much of what confuses us today can be better understood by examining history. This book does a wonderful job of looking at aspects of the Depression.

Must See Movie
Waiting for Superman: A must see for everyone. This documentary on K-12 education will deeply affect you.

Chairman/CEO, American Environmental Energy, Inc., (Renewable Energy Industry) American Environmental Energy, Inc. capitalizes on global renewable energy opportunities - focusing on the development of wind, solar, hydro, biomass and bio-fuel generation, clean water, and waste to energy. We participate as principal in project risk equity and add value by solving for market inefficiencies between project entrepreneurs at various stages and sophisticated financing sources operating within their own hierarchy of mandates, regulations, expectations, and requirements.

What's a key differentiation of your company? What kind of company, product or service would your company partner with or complement?
Our approach effectively integrates the skill sets necessary to fully embrace the project lifecycle. In short, we function worldwide to source, evaluate, qualify, package, finance, and manage renewable energy projects. Then, significantly different from other market participants, we add an additional level of back office support systems and services to ensure transparency and success.

We are seeking to compliment / partner with sophisticated financing sources – fund managers, private equity, asset management, etc. who are interested in excellent opportunities in renewable energy in the U.S. or globally, whether they have present experience in the sector, or simply have the desire to participate. We would also welcome additional sources of projects or disruptive technologies in the sector.

Why did you choose to participate in the Dean's Leadership Circle? Do you have any success stories to share?
I joined the DLC to engage myself with other like-minded enthusiastic members of the business community having ties to UCI, and also the desire to aid and facilitate the fantastic progress and excellence that The Paul Merage School of Business represents.

At present, I am excited about what I anticipate to be a success story for us in a European acquisition that we have planned this quarter, followed shortly by our European subsidiary (Pantheon Energy Europe) launch and IPO on the Deutsche Börse Exchange.

I am very interested in combining infrastructure, energy, and education in a unique way for the future that would greatly benefit children and adults globally, where literacy is tied to the lack of basic needs in life. I know - a great project to partner with Oprah, but I think those of us in the DLC can handle it if you are interested. Let me know – formulating the solution has been a hobby of mine for some time.

Director Private Client Insurance Services , Wood Gutmann and Bogart Insurance Brokers. I assess structure and create sophisticated personal insurance programs for families with significant or complex insurable assets.

What's a key differentiation of your company?
Wood Gutmann Bogart is nationally rated in the top 100 property casualty agencies but still maintains a boutique brokerage identity and a very deep community connection with Orange County through its generous giving to organizations that help men, women and children locally. Licensed in 47states , we are able to place and leverage exposures that many brokers cannot.

What kind of company, product or service would your company partner with or complement?
Wood Gutmann and Bogart's private client insurance services would complement professional advisors that have a holistic approach to the client's wealth management needs. The transference of risk through the appropriate insurance programs is one of the most effective (and affordable) wealth preservation tools available to the financial advisor.

Why did you choose to participate in the Dean's Leadership Circle?
From business leaders, to faculty and students, we all depend on higher education as the fabric of our society. The DLC is a community of professionals who value the presence of the Merage School at UCI and the amazing culture of excellence and high expectations it has brought to Southern California. Participation in the Dean's Leadership Circle is essential for any professional hoping to sustain and grow the vibrant entrepreneurial culture in the OC.

Do you have any success stories to share?
I have been able to build lasting friendships with a tremendous group of alumni who share my passion for the support of The Merage School of Business.

My greatest joys are my two sons , Evan and Cade, and my supportive husband, Don. Besides my beautiful family, I am especially passionate about supporting the Orangewood Children Foundation in Orange County, specifically supporting scholarship programs for the emancipated youth. I enjoy skiing and laying on the beach in Hawaii... both in my plans for this year!
