Andy's Insider Update
Andy's Insider UpdateDear Fellow DLC members,

Happy New Year! I hope that you had a wonderful holiday season with family and friends. Reflecting upon my time here, it has been a pleasure to witness the tremendous growth of the Dean's Leadership Circle since its inception in 2005. I am truly grateful to each of you - for your continued support which has enabled funding of critical initiatives for the Merage School including a renovated classroom, student scholarships, and most recently the endowed professorship.

And very recently, I have been most humbled by my colleagues as the inaugural recipient of the Dean's Leadership Circle Professorship. I cannot tell you how meaningful it is to me to have both the DLC and my esteemed colleagues recognize all of our collective efforts in this way. The Merage School already has eleven professors who have been awarded such Chairs and Professorships, and I am honored to be selected as the twelfth. Through the wonderful generosity of DLC members; the Professorship will provide some flexible funding to aid my research, including my intention to write a second book on higher education. My first book, Public No More: The new Path to Excellence for America's Public Universities, with Gary Fethke, will be published this spring by Stanford University Press.

Another exciting initiative, through the Beall Center, is to establish a systematic process for commercialization of ideas generated on the UC Irvine campus. The University is currently managing over 800 inventions. Our intent is to help bring more of these ideas to fruition. I am also continuing in my final year on the AACSB International Board. Currently, I am Immediate Past Chair which continues to provide opportunities to address large groups of business school deans on critical topics in higher education, while also enhancing the Merage School brand.

It was great to see so many of you at the Business Outlook breakfast last week, where former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm joined me in discussing current political and economic challenges with a crowd of over 600 community supporters in conjunction with the Irvine Chamber. I also look forward to seeing all of you at our next Distinguished Speaker Series event, featuring CEO of Emelux, Jim McCluney, on February 9.

Lately, I have started reading snippets of Steve Jobs. Walter Isaacson's biographies, especially of Einstein and Franklin, are excellent. His writing on Jobs helps us all understand how idiosyncratic folks, while sometimes disruptive, can be highly creative. And the holidays are always a great time for movies. I liked Moneyball for the business strategy sense of baseball and The Muppets because my children grew up watching and loving them. OK, I watched and enjoyed them, too.

Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Warm regards,

Andy
Endowed Professorship Announcement – From Desk of Sandra
Dear Members of the Dean's Leadership Circle:

Happy New Year! I feel honored to begin this new year by sharing the following important announcement regarding the Dean's Leadership Circle Endowed Professorship.

For those of you in attendance at the Dean's Leadership Circle's End of Year Holiday Celebration, you witnessed this announcement made by Senior Associate Dean Rajeev Tyagi.

The selected recipient of the inaugural Dean's Leadership Circle Endowed Professorship is Dean Andrew J. Policano.

The decision to select Dean Policano was made through a formal school process in which a faculty committee is tasked with identifying senior faculty members to be awarded Chairs or Professorships for their contributions. The Merage School already has eleven professors who have been awarded such Chairs and Professorships, and Andy is the twelfth person to receive it.

I hope you will join me in celebration of this news as each and every one of you helped make this possible. Creating the Dean's Leadership Circle Endowed Professorship was one of the top priorities of the Merage School when we began the campaign in 2007. Within three years and more than 400 donations, your support created this honor and will recognize the true visionary who helped create the Dean's Leadership Circle.

On behalf of the entire Merage School, faculty, staff, and Dean's Leadership Circle Advisory Board members, I wish to thank you for your ongoing support of the Merage School of Business and the Dean's Leadership Circle.

Click here to read a copy of the press release. Should you have any questions, please let me know by reply email or contact me directly at 949-824-8880.

Best regards,
Sandra

Fisker Holiday Party & Roundtables

Event Info / Recaps – Fisker Holiday Party & RoundtablesOn December 8, the Dean's Leadership Circle drew in 200+ guests for the highly anticipated Annual Holiday End of Year Celebration at Fisker Automotive of Orange County. Located in Irvine, members celebrated the future together and enjoyed the first peek at the world's first eco-chic, eco-friendly, luxury performance car and were able to sit behind the wheel and sign up for a test drive. Guests received a red carpet welcome complete with a live jazz band, festive holiday lights and decor, passed appetizers and sparkling wine including a plentiful buffet dinner.

The Dean's Leadership Circle was a very select group invited to view this luxury plug-in hybrid, which has been all the rage with car aficionados here in Orange County and all over the world due to the strategic design and limited, custom order that are available. Dean's Leadership Circle members not only enjoyed a private viewing of the cars, but also received an update from Damon Shelly of Shelly Automotive Group who operates Fisker of Orange County, and Alexander Klatt, Vice President of Global Design of Fisker Automotive provided an overview of how the care was designed including several of the key features of the "Karma".

Following their presentations on these revolutionary cars, DLC emcee Kyle Van Hoften '97 introduced Senior Associate Dean of the Merage School, Rajeev Tyagi. Rajeev presented the exciting announcement that all DLC had been waiting months to hear, the news that the UC campus has chosen to appoint Dean Andy Policano as the inaugural holder of the Dean's Leadership Circle Endowed Professorship!

The funds to create this Endowed Professorship were provided through gifts from more than 350 donors through the Dean's Leadership Circle, totaling $1.2 million which enabled the Merage School to be the first on UCI's campus to fund such a unique and highly sought after Professorship. The campaign began in 2007, and in 2010 the goal was reached! The generosity of our Visionary members was highlighted as they helped to lead the campaign by stepping up to provide greater funding and allowed this professorship to be realized. The evening concluded with the dean thanking all members for their support to the School.

We thank you the event sponsors for making this event such a great success! Please see photos below of the event.
