September 09, 2015 5:30 PM to September 09, 2015 7:00 PM VIP Reception & Personal Tour of the Laguna Art Museum

The Dean’s Leadership Circle cordially invites members along with spouses to

A special VIP Reception & Personal Tour of the Laguna Art Museum

Wednesday, September 9, 2015

5:30 p.m. Wine & Cheese Reception, 6:15 p.m. Private Tour

This will be a great evening to close our summer season.
Feel free to bring along an art lover, collector, colleague and/or your spouse to come join us.

Executive Director Malcolm Warner will provide a personal tour of the exhibits on view, including UCI Alumna Marcia Hafif: From the Inventory, Phil Dike: The Wave and Malibu Series, and Selections from the Permanent Collection…and friends.

The Laguna Art Museum began in 1918 as a small gallery in a converted cottage, where local artists would display and sell their pieces to the public. As the exhibits and collections grew larger over the next several decades, the founders moved the gallery into a larger, custom space, and eventually transformed it into a museum celebrating the development of Californian art from the 19th century to the present. The museum currently boasts a permanent collection of more than 3,500 works, as well as rotating exhibits that track the evolution of artistic expression.

Malcolm Warner joined Laguna Art Museum as Executive Director in January 2012. Previously he was Deputy Director at the Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, Texas; Senior Curator of Paintings and Sculpture at the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven; and Curator of European Art at the San Diego Museum of Art.

October 08, 2015 5:30 PM to October 08, 2015 7:30 PM Food for Thought Series-- The Phoenix of Failure

The Dean’s Leadership Circle is pleased to present the Food for Thought Series!

The Phoenix of Failure – Understanding and Leading Through Mistakes, Mishaps and Blunders

From the time we are children, most of us are taught to avoid and abhor failure. That belief system flies in the face of the reality that failure is inevitable, fostering dysfunctional emotional reactions and political maneuvering rather than the more rational problem solving and decision making processes that would better serve our organizations, our teams and ourselves. While some popular literature and blogs espouse the value of "celebrating and learning from failure," they provide little guidance to address our predetermined beliefs about failure, nor do they provide models and tools for leaders to distinguish between and strategically respond to different types of failures. Because the perception of failures in oneself or others often result in strong emotional reactions, it is important to understand the mental processes that trigger those reactions to more clearly understand failure in more objective, realistic terms; to manage one's own responses with greater resiliency and effectiveness; and to use leadership strategies and action steps to learn from, recover from and come out even stronger as a result of more effectively dealing with failure.

Session will be led by Merage School Lecturer and DLC Legacy Seat member, Sue Padernacht. Her full bio can be found HERE

Certificate in Business Data and Analytics

Understanding the Managerial Implications of Using Big Data and Analytics

As data and the use of data continues to change the business landscape, now is the time to position yourself and your organization to be more competitive by putting the vast amount of information to work. Effectively managing data requires the ability to harness the immense volume of data and the quick influx of new information available, accurately determine the quality of the data collected, and understand how the data should be applied to the business process.

With all the buzz surrounding “big data”, the real excitement lies in the opportunity to better leverage the vast amount of data and information that a company has access to, and in understanding which tools and techniques are best for the organization. The Certificate in Business Data and Analytics (CBDA) Program is taught by thought leaders and experts in the area of business information systems from the top-ranked Paul Merage School of Business at UC Irvine, and provides participants with the knowledge and tools needed to take full advantage of the information and resources available to make their organizations more competitive.

Participant Profile

- Middle to high-level managers and executives tasked with identifying and interpreting industry and company specific raw data for use in gaining a competitive advantage.

- Individuals with little to no computer science background who want to gain insight into how best to utilize data for their organization
