Success! Merage School Commencement 2009

Commencement 2009 was a very special day for the latest group of Paul Merage School of Business graduates. The Bren Events Center was filled with family and friends supporting these special people. Dean Andy Policano welcomed everyone and noted what a terrific crowd turned out to celebrate the achievements of our newest Merage Alumni!

Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Mike Gottfredson then spoke on behalf of the entire University of California, Irvine campus and shared how proud the campus was of this year’s graduates and the important role they will play in the future of this nation. Dean Policano introduced Mr. Ed Fuller, Chair of the Dean’s Advisory Board and President of Marriott International Lodging. Ed shared how pleased he was to be a part of the School and how the Merage School’s focus on innovation is critical in today’s fast-paced business environment.

As Mr. Fuller left the stage, Dean Policano introduced featured speaker, retired General Leon J. LaPorte, a Merage alum from the Class of 1977. General LaPorte addressed the graduates by eloquently emphasizing the importance of leadership, relationships, and balance in life. He reflected on his 38-year military career that culminated with his leadership of the United Nations Command, the Republic of Korea-United States Combined Forces Command, and the United States Forces Korea. The Generals comments were very well received by the large crowd.

Faculty members Alladi Venkatesh, Leonard Lane, and Imran Currim joined Dean Policano with the presentation of the degrees. The graduates smiled proudly as they crossed the stage lauded by multiple outbursts of applause and excitement in recognition of their accomplishments.

The Dean’s closing remarks focused on success – which included the importance of social responsibility. He encouraged Merage Graduates to consider the frequently asked question posed to business leaders: “What do you make?” by responding accordingly: “I make a difference.” The day ended on a positive note as family and friends gathered for hugs and photographs with their newly minted graduates.
