Alumni Network Speaker Series Luncheon
Successful Job Search Strategies During Challenging Economic Times
The Merage Alumni Network welcomed Career Coach Andrew Johnson to campus on Wednesday, June 10th for this informative presentation focused on alumni in transition.
Mr. Johnson informed the group that he would not be speaking about job search techniques such as using recruiters, creating great resumes, or navigating the Career Management section of the Merage Alumni website (since they already know about that). Rather, he’d be focusing on the leadership element of their career transition – ATTITUDE, VISION (or PARADIGM), and what it means to identify and land a terrific career opportunity.
Attitude:
Mr. Johnson asked, "Are these challenging economic times a problem or opportunity?"
To which he emphasized his perspective as opportunities
More problems to solve -- greater the need for creativity
Increased potential to make a difference
Vision/Paradigm:
Mr. Johnson discussed that leaders have two things: A vision and followers, adding that in a job search, your vision is your perception of your career objective. The follower is YOU.
Johnson’s ability to identify with the room full professionals in transition stems from his own personal job transitions throughout his career.
Mr. Johnson concluded, “In over 28 years of experience in working with leaders in the transition, it is clear to me that the people who have the most success in finding meaningful work are those men and women who know what they want to do and can prove they are good at it.”
Johnson’s summary for success in finding a great job:
- Know what you want to do and how you want to help your target companies get what they need.
- Know what your target companies need and be able to prove you’re good at it through story telling.
- Companies hire people they like and trust. Develop your skill in building rapport and trust through self-knowledge and an intimate understanding of your target company’s needs.
