Information about Belgium


I. General Business Information

First, let us look at a map of Belgium.


Note how the country is separated into three regions.
(1) Brussels is the center region;
(2) the Flanders are the northern Flemish-speaking region;
(3) Wallonia is the southern French-speaking region.

We will visit Louvain/Leuven, the city located immediately to the east of Brussels.

II. Government and European Union

First things first. Visit the site for the Belgian federal government.

Then visit the official Web page for the European Union.
The full text of the Maastricht Treaty is also on-line.

Belgium of course belongs to the newly-created World Trade Organisation.


III. Tourism

For European train schedules, I highly recommend the German railway web site, which has detailed schedules and fares. Click on "Travelservice (Timetable)" for English menus. Another resource is the Belgian railway web site.

The Belgian airline (now defunct) was Sabena Airlines.
It is now replaced by SN Brussels.

Belgium is home to a number of top-rated Universities. They can generally be classified as
(i) French-speaking or Flemish-speaking, and (ii) catholic or secular.

V. News Organization

The French-speaking public radio station is RTBF and has regular news broadcasts.
