How Do You Create Something Completely New?

Prior to attending the Merage School, I was an engineer. While I enjoyed the work, I was more interested in evaluating various aspects of the business problem. The Merage School has given me that opportunity in ways I couldn’t possibly imagine.

In our classes, we typically work in a five-person team. Our team was asked to create a business plan for a completely new initiative. In creating this plan for a microfinance credit rating agency, I learned vital business considerations such as how you think through a concept; how to decide what your goal, service and product are; and how to position yourself differently from the competition. This was an invaluable experience – rather than just reading a book, we created a brand new idea!

They Helped Make Me Feel at Home

Being an international student presents its own set of challenges. I’m still trying to get comfortable with the community and the language. However, prior to the first week and orientation for incoming students, the school provided an additional orientation specifically designed for international students. We had the advantage of getting there before the domestic students arrived in order to make sure we were “up and running.”

Those first three days of orientation were indispensable. We were given instruction on how American business operates and participated in colloquiums on cultural differences to help us acclimate into the school and American society.

When the domestic students arrived, we all attended the Merage School "boot camp" -  four days of intense instruction. It was a wonderful experience because I got to know all the international and domestic students before even walking into my first class! A strong sense of community was forged during that period.

  I Know I Can Be a Leader

One thing I can say with absolute certainty is that the Merage School offers lots of opportunities for honing your leadership skills. For example, you can be a leader in your team – we nominate a leader for each of our projects. Or you can be a leader of a club. Everyone gets the experience of seeing how people will work with you. If want to build your leadership skills, this is an excellent opportunity to test what works and what doesn’t.
