A Bright Future: Alumna Begins Career with Deloitte

Erica Truong, BA ’19, was one of the many students from the UCI Paul Merage School of Business that knew exactly where she was going after graduation.

With a dual emphasis in finance and accounting, as well as a minor in digital information systems, Truong joined Deloitte as a business technology analyst.

The future wasn’t quite so clear when she began her studies at the Merage School.

“Growing up, my parents would turn on the TV every morning and listen to the New York Stock Exchange debate, and that sparked a sense of curiosity, enveloping me into the world of business at a young age,” Truong said.

Truong, who is a first-generation college student, grew up in San Francisco, California, after her parents immigrated there from Vietnam.

When it was time to choose a college, she was interested in gaining more independence and discovering her own interests in a brand-new environment. She chose Merage.

During her freshman year, Truong joined the Merage Undergraduate Student Association and the Antleader Mentorship Program at UCI, which introduced her to the local business community and connected her to mentors that helped her navigate her career path.

As a Merage School student she gained experience in finance, risk management and consulting with leading business companies.

Consulting not only satisfied Truong’s intellectual curiosity and desire to implement technology solutions, but also her aspirations to explore the world and visit new places.

And that’s exactly what Truong accomplished during her last semester at the Merage School—she studied business abroad at the National University of Singapore.

Truong explored incredible cultural sites, like The Pinnacle at Duxton in Singapore, sampled street food such as fried chicken and oysters in Taiwan and even celebrated her 22nd birthday abroad.

In her new adventure at Deloitte, Truong hopes to grow and develop her skills both personally and professionally.

“I look forward to meeting more people and gaining new mentors,” Truong added. “I hope to gain more perspectives on the working world, and help my clients succeed in the projects that I take on.”
