Supporting Wildfire Victims with Free Resources on Rebuilding

February 06, 2025 • By UC Irvine Paul Merage School of Business

In response to the catastrophic California wildfires and North Carolina weather disasters, the UC Irvine Paul Merage School of Business is offering vital support to affected families by providing free access to an Amazon Best-Selling book that offers practical guidance on rebuilding and multigenerational living.

Under One Roof: Creating Harmony for Multigenerational Living, written by Emily K. Graham, Angel L. Vargas, and John L. Graham, is now available free to download through eScholarship.org, the University of California’s open-access publishing platform. The book provides strategies for designing sustainable, long-term housing solutions—particularly beneficial for families temporarily living together while they rebuild.

A Timely Resource for Recovery

The book, a bestseller in multiple categories—including Parent & Adult Relationships, Aging Parents, and Family Health—offers expert insights on:

  • Deciding to Live Together – Navigating the challenges and benefits of multigenerational living.
  • Proximity and Privacy – Creating harmonious shared housing arrangements.
  • Designing and Remodeling – Planning resilient homes with future needs in mind.
  • How to Find, Buy, or Build Housing (including ADUs) – Exploring sustainable housing options for families.
  • Making Agreements for Living Together – Establishing clear guidelines for cohabitation.

Since design, permitting, and construction can take time, the book recommends building Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) as a practical and immediate solution to housing needs while families work toward permanent homes.
