In a rapidly evolving world where STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers are increasingly vital, initiatives that prepare the next generation for success are more important than ever. That’s why the Future Leaders Initiative (FLI) at UC Irvine’s Paul Merage School of Business is making a significant impact by equipping high school and first-year community college students with the tools, knowledge, and connections to thrive in the business side of STEM fields.
“The Future Leaders Initiative is a program for high school students and first-year community college students that is intended to prepare them to perform in the business of STEM,” FLI Program Director Kevin Bradford says. “It is an exposure program to executives, businesses, and potential careers in STEM-oriented fields, especially focusing on leadership within these organizations.”
FLI is a unique, week-long immersive experience designed to introduce students to the inner workings of the business of STEM. The purpose of the program is to bring students face-to-face with top executives—often CEOs—who share their journeys and strategies for success. “FLI creates a pipeline of talented individuals who are prepared to step into leadership roles in STEM industries,” says Bradford, “so that the workforce can better reflect the diverse communities these companies serve.”
Unlike traditional classroom learning, FLI provides a dynamic and immersive educational experience. Students attend daily sessions at on campus and visit corporate headquarters of partnering companies in Orange County. As Bradford explains, “We’ve partnered with local organizations and national corporations that welcome our students, providing them with an overview of their companies and a behind-the-scenes look at how they operate.”
The schedule is rigorous, starting at 8:30 AM and includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner with the team. “It’s not an overnight program, but it’s an all-day commitment,” says Bradford. Sessions feature a rotating roster of speakers—key leaders in various industries—who provide insight and guidance. Students also engage in homework assignments, supported by a software platform that leads them through a leadership immersion course, reinforcing the lessons learned throughout the week.
The impact of FLI extends far beyond the week-long program. “One of our students was invited to meet with an executive who gave him his personal contact information,” says Bradford. “The student followed up and arranged a breakfast meeting with the executive who prides himself on always being the first to arrive. But he was shocked to find that the student had beaten him to the restaurant—having ridden his bike ten miles across the city to make the meeting on time.”
It’s this level of dedication and ambition that FLI seeks to nurture, and the results speak for themselves: “We measure everything,” Bradford emphasizes. “We measure student experiences, speaker impressions, corporate satisfaction, and alumni engagement. What’s amazing is that 100 percent of the corporations we work with are extremely satisfied, giving us a five out of five rating. Parents also report that their children take the lessons home, influencing their families in positive ways.”
The program’s benefits don’t stop at inspiration and exposure; they extend into practical career-building opportunities. “The Merage School has partnered with Google to provide post-graduation certifications in areas such as project management and coding languages, free of charge,” says Bradford. “Not only to the students but also to their family members.”
FLI is ultimately about changing the trajectory of families, as Bradford explains, “The changes may not be immediately visible, but the seeds we plant now will grow into future opportunities for our FLI students.”
One unique aspect of the FLI program is in the way they prepare their guest speakers. “We encourage them to discuss their journeys in an authentic, non-linear way,” Bradford says. “We want to emphasize the ups and downs, because success isn’t a straight path. Students need to hear about adversity, perseverance, discipline, and how to handle setbacks. This resonates deeply with both students and parents.”
“The success of FLI wouldn’t be possible without a strong foundation of leadership and collaboration,” says Bradford. “The vision for this program comes from Dean Ian Williamson, and none of this would happen without great all the partnerships we’ve developed across the Orange County business community. This is truly a collaboration.”
Bradford is quick to mention the strength of his internal team at the Merage School of Business which works tirelessly to ensure FLI’s continued impact, coordinating with corporate sponsors and refining the program each year to maximize its effectiveness.
FLI is more than just a summer program—it’s a launchpad for future leaders. By providing young students with exposure to top executives, immersive learning experiences, and lifelong mentorship, the Future Leaders Initiative is shaping the next generation of STEM innovators.
“STEM isn’t for everyone,” Bradford admits, “but for those who have an interest, we want to make sure they feel comfortable and confident in pursuing it.”
For students dreaming of a future in STEM, FLI offers the inspiration, education, and connections to turn those dreams into reality.
Any students eager to take advantage of this incredible opportunity can find more information the Future Leaders Initiative available online. “The application process is straightforward,” says Bradford. “We’re looking for students who want to learn about STEM careers, who show leadership potential, and who represent something larger than themselves—their communities and families.”
