Irvine, CA - (September 16, 2022) -The Leadership Development Institute at the UCI Paul Merage School of Business is launching the Chief Nursing Officer Program to provide nursing leaders with the mindset, skills and frameworks required to succeed as chief nursing officers. The program is being launched in collaboration with Emeritus, the global leader, making world-class professional education accessible and affordable. Enrollment is now open for a December 2022 start.
Hospitals are facing critical staffing shortages in today’s radically altered nursing landscape. The World Health Organization estimates a projected shortfall of 15 million healthcare workers globally by 2030. In the U.S. alone, nearly a quarter of hospitals have reported a shortage of workers and a decrease of nearly 105,000 employees since February 2020.
"Nursing shortages are fueling a dangerous cycle. The scarcity of nurses causes burnout, high workloads and moral distress which leads more nurses to leave the profession. This cycle is unsustainable" said Brooke Baldwin, Chief Nursing Executive at UCI Health. "We must equip nurse leaders about how to create healthy work environments with the business insights to retain nurses in the profession and help our profession in the years to come.”
Program participants will join a global cohort benefiting from the learning journey’s in-depth curriculum taught by a faculty that includes experienced nursing and physician C-suite leaders and renowned business scholars. The program includes 18 weeks of core modules focused on strategy and change management, driving organizational effectiveness, and workforce planning and organizational management. Following this core curriculum, 12 weeks of online electives are available (participants choose two). Throughout the program, participants will work on a professional development workbook that will serve as a resource and toolkit. The program culminates with an optional conference and networking event at the Merage School’s Center for Health Care Management and Policy in Irvine, California. Upon completing the program, participants will be awarded a verified digital certificate by the UCI Paul Merage School of Business and granted status as UCI Paul Merage School of Business Alumni.
The program features faculty and guest speakers from The Paul Merage School of Business, the Susan & Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences, and UCI Health. Top executives from leading organizations such as MemorialCare, UCSF, Hoag, Children’s Hospital of Orange County, and Kaiser Permanente, among others, will also share their deep knowledge of business leadership and best practices in healthcare management.
“Healthcare organizations are looking to nursing executives to provide strategic leadership in the C-suite that drives sustainable growth while meeting the highest standards for patient care,” said faculty lead Maritza Campo, Ph.D. “Thought leaders have designed the Chief Nursing Officer Program at the intersection of business and nursing to offer practical skills and frameworks to address today's problems and innovate for the future.”
“We're honored to partner with the Merage School to offer this comprehensive learning journey," added Ranil Herath, president of Emeritus Healthcare. "This program is expected to be a nursing executive leadership talent pipeline for healthcare systems that will enable them to retain and develop leadership within their own systems. As part of our mutual commitment to building sustainable access to high-quality care, Emeritus has provided a $250,000 research grant to reinvent nursing leadership education for generations ahead."
The program is currently enrolling highly qualified nurse leaders for the December 2022 cohort. To apply or request additional information, please visit the program page here.
