Graduation
At the Merage School, students must satisfy four groups of degree requirements in order to earn a baccalaureate degree from UCI.
The four groups are major requirements, general education (GE) requirements, university requirements and degree-specific requirements. When these are complete, you are ready to graduate.
Requirements for Graduation
In addition to completing all courses required for the Business Administration major, general education, and university requirements, you must also meet the following requirements:
Unit requirement
You must have credit for a minimum of 180 quarter units.
GPA requirement:
You must have a 2.0 GPA overall AND 2.0 GPA in your major.
Senior Residency:
At least 36 of the final 45 units completed by a student for the bachelor’s degree must be earned in residence at the UCI campus (including UC programs like UCEAP, UCDC).
Time to Degree Policy:
Students who enter UCI directly from high school are expected to complete all degree requirements within 4 years (12 quarters, not including summer) but can be provided for up to 5 years (15 quarters, not including summers) on a case-by-case basis. This includes completion of any minors or additional (double or triple) majors. A maximum of 216 units is permitted for all students in non-Engineering majors after their 12th quarter of study at UCI. Students with Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) credit may exceed the unit maximum by the amount of that credit.
Students who enter UCI as junior transfers from other institutions are expected to complete all degree requirements within 2 years (6 quarters, not including summer) but can be provided for up to 3 years (9 quarters, not including summers) on a case-by-case basis, regardless of units. This includes completion of any minors or additional (double or triple) majors.
Note: Students who complete their minimum degree requirements before their 12th quarter as an admitted freshman or 6th quarter as an admitted transfer are not forced to graduate early and can utilize their remaining quarters. However, financial aid is not guaranteed. Students are expected to follow up with the Financial Aid office if they have any concerns about receiving aid. International Students should also follow up with the International Center for any visa-related questions.
Application for Graduation:
Graduation is NOT automatic. You must file an Application for Graduation online. Your application indicates to us that you are planning to complete your degree requirements by the end of a particular quarter. The Application for Graduation is available under the “Applications” portion of your StudentAccess. NOTE: emphases are not listed on your graduation application, so please disregard the "Concentration" option. You are able to submit an application when you have at least 120 units of cumulative credit.
After your application has been reviewed, its status will change from “PENDING” to “RECEIVED”. To ensure that you are on track for the quarter of your expected graduation, you are encouraged to schedule an appointment with a full-time advisor.
Students are certified for the BA degree once all coursework and grades have been posted to their UCI transcript. The quarterly deadlines to apply for graduation are as follows, and we encourage you to apply as soon as possible:
- Fall 2024: Friday, November 1 at 5:00 p.m.
- Winter and Spring 2025: Friday, February 7 at 5:00 p.m.
- Summer 2025: Friday, March 7 at 5:00 p.m.
Please note that we strictly adhere to the above deadlines for participation in Commencement.
Transcripts:
Degrees are noted on official transcripts approximately six to seven weeks after the end of the quarter in which they are awarded. Academic transcripts may be ordered from the Registrar's Office in advance, indicating that they be held until the degree is noted on the transcript. For more information, please refer here.
Diplomas:
Diplomas will be available approximately two to four months after the quarter in which the degree was awarded. The Registrar’s Office will notify you via email when your diploma is available. More information about this process is available here.
Upon graduation, academic records are final (may not be changed). It is your responsibility to check the accuracy of your academic record before you graduate. (Note that an NR becomes an F or NP after one quarter of subsequent enrollment or at the end of the quarter immediately preceding award of the degree, whichever comes first. Contact the instructor of the class about the possibility of removing the NR or replacing it with a grade.)
Congratulations to the Class of 2024!

As a reminder, students must have a graduation application on file for Fall 2023, Winter 2024, Spring 2024 or Summer 2024 to register and participate in commencement. A graduation application indicates that you are planning to complete your degree requirements by the end of a particular quarter (Fall 2023 – Summer 2024). The Application for Graduation is available under the “Applications” portion of your StudentAccess. NOTE: emphases are not listed on your graduation application, so please disregard the "Concentration" option.
All graduates eligible to participate in Commencement will be able to register on the Commencement website from April 1, 2024 at 9:00 AM through April 12, 2024 at 5:00 PM. Academic Regalia:
All graduates must purchase a cap and gown to participate in the ceremony. More information regarding the purchase of regalia and Grad Expo will be updated at a later time.
NOTE: You may not use a prior year’s cap and gown set; it will not match this year’s design and fabric. Black dye color in gowns cannot be made permanently color fast. In case of rain, neither UCI, UCIAA nor Jostens will be responsible for stains resulting from the wearing of this garment. For questions regarding cap and gown, please email alumni@uci.edu.
Latin Honors:
Requirements are subject to yearly change and other eligibility restrictions, including disciplinary and academic integrity violations. Additional information and GPA requirements can be found at https://www.reg.uci.edu/grades/latinhonors.html.
