Joel West is a teacher and researcher on innovation strategy in high technology industries. With Henry Chesbrough and Wim Vanhaverbeke, he is co-editor of Open Innovation: Researching a New Paradigm (Oxford, 2006) and New Frontiers in Open Innovation (Oxford, 2014). Other research has examined firm platform strategies in open source software and mobile telecommunications. He has published more than 40 scholarly articles and chapters, including articles in Information Systems ResearchJournal of Product Innovation Management, Journal of Technology Transfer, R&D Management, Research Policy and Telecommunications Policy.

Since 2011, Dr. West has been Professor of Innovation & Entrepreneurship at the Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences, one of seven Claremont Colleges. From 2002-2009, he was an Associate Professor and Professor at San Jose State University, College of Business. He previously taught at UCI, Pepperdine and Temple University Japan. From 1987-2002, he was President and co-founder of Palomar Software, a Macintosh software development company in Oceanside.
