Dr. Afable is the recently retired President and Chief Executive Officer of St. Joseph Hoag Health (SJHH), an Orange County CA-based integrated delivery system created by the affiliation of Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian and the Southern California region of St. Joseph Health.   SJHH is one of the largest healthcare organizations in Southern California, with a focus on population health and high value clinical care.    SJHH includes 7 hospitals, almost 2000 beds, a 2000+ physician medical network (425 employed, over 1600 affiliated), over 5000 physicians on medical staffs, 12,500 employees, and $3.8 B in annual net patient revenue.  
 
Concurrently, Dr. Afable was the Executive Vice President of the Southern California region of Providence St Joseph Health, the largest integrated health system in the Western US. 
 
Dr. Afable is currently the President and Board Chair of BeWellOC, a public-private partnership working to improve the mental health for all residents of Orange County.  He is also providing consulting services to many of the top health systems in the United States, focusing on strategy and innovation with CEOs and Boards of Trustees.
 
Dr. Afable served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian from August 2005 until the creation of SJHH in March 2013.  Hoag is an independent, faith-based, not-for-profit, tertiary care hospital system located in Newport Beach, California.  Hoag is the largest provider of secondary, tertiary and select quaternary healthcare services for the 3.1 million residents of Orange County, California.
 
Prior to joining Hoag, Dr. Afable was Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Catholic Health East, a 31-hospital, multi-state healthcare system on the east coast.  Responsibilities included quality of care, clinical integration, physician relationships, and managed care coordination across the system. 
 
Past assignments include President and CEO of Preferred Physician Partners, a physician practice management and consulting company based in Cincinnati, Ohio and Vice President for Physician Integration at Catholic Healthcare Partners, also based in Ohio.   Previously, Afable was Associate Professor of Medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in North Carolina, and Clinical Assistant Professor at Northwestern School of Medicine in Chicago. 
 
Dr. Afable has over 20 years of medical practice experience as a solo, group, and academic practitioner.  He is board certified in Internal Medicine and has had added qualification in Geriatric Medicine.
 
Dr. Afable received his BS degree from Loyola University in Chicago and MD from the Loyola Stritch School of Medicine.  He obtained a Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree from the University of Illinois and a certificate in business administration from Villanova University.   He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.  He currently serves as Adjunct Professor and Lecturer at the University of California, Irvine Merage School of Business in Irvine, CA.
