Sandra Portocarrero is a Ph.D. candidate in Sociology at Columbia University, and a 2019-2020 visiting fellow at the Paul Merage School of Business at the University of California, Irvine. She investigates topics related to diversity and inclusion management through the lenses of organizational sociology, cultural sociology, and the sociology of expertise. She currently is working on a paper that explores how an elite organization fosters the creation of a stigmatized identity. Her dissertation explores diversity and inclusion management in the tech industry. She studies how high-status actors make meaning of diversity and inclusion, how strategies are formulated, and the effects of diversity and inclusion initiatives in minority groups. Her work is funded by the Paul and Daisy Soros Foundation, and the National Science Foundation.
