Through a 20+ year career, John has built and guided a department dedicated to strengthening Merage’s teaching, research and community service missions through the creative use of technology. As a recent alum, John built the School’s first computing lab. With Professor Ken Kraemer and a grant from Toshiba America, he established the 2nd laptop program in any business school in North America in 1986. By 2000, his group wrote a learning management system awarded “Top 50 Intranet Site” by CIO magazine, which was subsequently implemented at both UC Berkeley and Purdue. By 2005, his group began streaming all instruction live in two of the Merage School’s MBA programs. John has received national awards for innovations in higher education technology from Hewlett Packard, Microsoft and Dell. At the UC Irvine campus, he was awarded the Lauds and Laurels Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998.

By 2007, John assumed responsibility for major renovations and building, and has since managed renovations of 6 classrooms, and has built the Merage School’s Executive Commons, Center for Real Estate and Dean’s Conference Room. As chair of the Merage School’s building committee, he managed the $50MM School of Business I building which opened in 2014. In 2016, he was charged with the Merage hybrid and online course initiative, as well as the School’s facilities operation.
