UC Irvine appoints Washington State Dean for Paul Merage School of Business!

Elizabeth Dahl accepts position at School of Social Sciences

Evening at The Los Angeles Times |
|
Eric Spangenberg brings strong record of academics, fundraising and leadership |
 |
Irvine, Calif., March 6, 2014 - Eric R. Spangenberg, a proven academic leader with strengths in developing students, faculty and community support, has been chosen as new dean of UC Irvine's Paul Merage School of Business. His appointment is effective as of June 1.

Currently serving in his ninth year as dean of Washington State University's College of Business, Spangenberg is a recognized international scholar and committed fundraiser. He has established entrepreneurial initiatives now generating multimillion-dollar revenue streams. In addition, Spangenberg oversaw historic increases in MBA and Ph.D. enrollments while strategically revising curricula. He led a team in developing and launching online MBA programs that were ranked No. 1 last year by U.S. News & World Report, and online undergraduate degree programs have grown by more than 50 percent during his tenure.

"We're excited to welcome a leader with Eric Spangenberg's academic qualifications, administrative abilities and energy to The Paul Merage School of Business," said UC Irvine Chancellor Michael Drake. "His experience and leadership will help secure our position on the global stage as we celebrate our 50th anniversary and look forward to the future."

Spangenberg said he has been impressed by the aspirational philosophy, strategic thinking and energy of UC Irvine and welcomes the chance to become a part of the team. "Growing up in the West, the University of California system has been my gold standard with regard to public higher education," he said. "Accepting this position is an exciting opportunity. I look forward to working with faculty, students, alumni, administration, regents and the many others who invest in the research, educational and outreach objectives of the Merage School."

Spangenberg, 54, earned a Ph.D. at the University of Washington, with a major in marketing and a minor in social psychology. He began his career at WSU in 1990 as an assistant professor in the marketing department. He served in leadership positions on faculty senate and faculty affairs committees before entering administration and is an active volunteer for the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the largest and most prestigious international accrediting body for business schools.

An award-winning teacher and accomplished researcher, he's particularly well known for his work on the effects of olfactory and musical cues in the retail environment and the effects of self-prediction on people's behavior. His research has been published in the field's top journals and covered in the The Economist, Fast Company, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post, and on the BBC, CBS, Yahoo News, Salon and Boing, as well as numerous other international print, television and online media outlets.

Using his expertise in external relations, Spangenberg led a WSU team that introduced new community engagement initiatives – including a CEO speaker series, regional corporate and residential firesides chats, and an annual Dean's Leadership Celebration. These and other development activities ultimately yielded more than $68 million as part of a current fundraising campaign and a nearly 100 percent increase in the endowment value at the WSU College of Business.

Spangenberg's commitment to globalization has resulted in many more WSU business students studying abroad as well as the initiation of collaborative international dual-degree programs, among other programmatic innovations. He has developed and nurtured institutional partnerships in Asia, Europe and Africa, which has led to board and visiting scholar appointments. Over several years, the WSU College of Business has consistently been ranked among the top 25 in international business by U.S. News & World Report.

"The Merage School is well known around the world for its outstanding academic programs, world-class faculty and entrepreneurial spirit," said Howard Gillman, provost & executive vice chancellor at UC Irvine. "Eric Spangenberg's proven track record as a leader, academic innovator, fundraiser and community partner will accelerate the school's ascendency among globally preeminent programs."

To find the new dean, Kerry Vandell, professor of real estate at the Merage School, chaired a 13-member search committee comprising faculty, staff, students, alumni and members of the business community. They were charged with identifying candidates who could build on current strengths, foster creativity and innovation, and help secure resources to move the school forward. Paul Merage, the business school's namesake, advised the committee and met with final candidates.

"Eric has demonstrated a talent for strategic innovation and has a solid track record of program implementation," Merage said. "He is focused on outreach to the business community and will bring energetic leadership to the business school. I believe Eric will ably navigate the business school through the next stage of excellence and recognition on the global stage."

Spangenberg and his wife of more than 30 years, Judy, have four children. In addition to his passion for education and family, he enjoys reading, cycling, golf and skiing.

About the University of California, Irvine: Located in coastal Orange County, near a thriving employment hub in one of the nation's safest cities, UC Irvine was founded in 1965. One of only 62 members of the Association of American Universities, it's ranked first among U.S. universities under 50 years old by the London-based Times Higher Education. The campus has produced three Nobel laureates and is known for its academic achievement, premier research, innovation and anteater mascot. Led by Chancellor Michael Drake since 2005, UC Irvine has more than 28,000 students and offers 192 degree programs. It's Orange County's second-largest employer, contributing $4.3 billion annually to the local economy. |

Elizabeth Dahl accepts position at School of Social Sciences |
 |
Dear Dean's Leadership Circle Members:

It is with mixed emotion that I share with you that Liz Dahl has accepted a new opportunity to become the director of development at the School of Social Sciences. Her final day at the Merage School was March 28.

For the past eight years, Liz has been a trusted member of the alumni & development team here at the Merage School and served a very vital role in helping to grow the Dean's Leadership Circle and the Center for Investment & Wealth Management. She is a well-respected member of our staff, especially so among our alumni and supporters, and we will miss her warmth, positive energy and great passion for our School.

The fortunate news is that Liz will still remain a part of our UC Irvine family! Please join me in thanking Liz for her valuable contributions to the Merage School through all of these years, and let's congratulate her on what we are sure will be a very successful career ahead.

Thank you,
Sandra |

We are pleased to share an update on the Auditorium from Hathaway Dinwiddie, the California Construction firm overseeing the new building projects:

"At grade level, the auditorium will become an iconic and identifiable campus element for the Business School complex. It is a strong organizer for the building with its elliptical geometry that is apparent from several orientations. The auditorium and adjacent Starbucks café help enclose the form of the courtyard and mark the prominent entry to the building. The auditorium is provided with a campus access from the west for general assignment use and a more directed Business School access from the east through the two-story lobby atrium.

The auditorium is provided with an air delivery plenum below the seating for displacement ventilation that provides the quietest and most comfortable environment with the lowest operating cost only conditioning the lower portion of the space where the people are. The auditorium is provided with two distinct pre-function spaces. One is the at the atrium lobby which is capable of hosting private functions and another outdoor space that can be configured and secured for outdoor function conducive to the beautiful Southern California weather."

In addition, the auditorium will boast high end finishes, including a wood ceiling and stage. The configuration is wide, which allows every one of the 300 seats to feel close to the stage and presenter. It will truly be a showcase on the UCI campus, increasing further visibility for the Dean's Leadership Circle and the significant growth of The Paul Merage School of Business.

What's a key differentiation of your company?
Pacific Life sells life insurance and annuity products along with providing other investments for personal and business uses. The Real Estate Investment group I work with invests these proceeds for the company. Our loans are provided to large commercial real estate properties and development projects throughout the United States, Canada, and parts of Europe.

Why do you choose to participate in the Dean's Leadership Circle?

In June 2001, I graduated from UCI's FEMBA program. The association with the school and the plans for improvement of the MBA curriculum motivated me to be part of the Dean's Leadership Circle. I believed it would afford me the opportunity to impact the growth and direction of the school as well as provide me with a networking opportunity for like-minded individuals.

Please share any 'success stories' that you attribute to you being a member in the Dean's Leadership Circle and/or due to your continued involvement with The Paul Merage School of Business.

Becoming more involved in the school has given me several great opportunities. I have participated as a mentor and spoken to students at school events. Being part of the education of students is personally fulfilling. This involvement has also allowed me to evaluate students. I am responsible for the hiring of our graduate students into our investment group, and have benefited from hiring several students that my involvement has allowed me to evaluate their capabilities on a more complete level. I feel that this has given me the ability to find better matches for our department and my company has the benefit of these relationships.

What would you like fellow members of the Dean's Leadership Circle to know about you?

My passion is understanding the broader world outside of my personal and professional life. I am very interested to learn about the careers and challenges in other industries, especially how similarities exist between seemingly disparate professions. I readily engage in political debates and seek out the opportunity to understand different viewpoints. With three young kids, my time is filled with musicals, sports, school fundraisers, boy scouts and similar activities. Travelling with my family is my favorite past time. |

What's a key differentiation of your company?

In today's Internet-based housing market where 90% of buyers start their home search online, Coldwell Banker has the most robust technology platform. This provides significant advantages for marketing a home and allowing for broader lead capture and faster response to buyers.

What kind of company, product or service would your company partner with or complement?

Mortgage lenders, movers, contractors, insurance, title, escrow, interior decorator, architecture, termite, home inspection.

Why do you choose to participate in the Dean's Leadership Circle?

Over the years, I have become more and more impressed and amazed at the quality of UCI, the Merage School specifically. After learning about the DLC, it was an obvious opportunity to participate in this outstanding school by supporting high-quality education.

Please share any 'success stories' that you attribute to you being a member in the Dean's Leadership Circle and/or due to your continued involvement with The Paul Merage School of Business.

Nothing specific, but I have met a number of great people, and learned a lot by attending the Distinguished Speaker Series.

What would you like fellow members of the Dean's Leadership Circle to know about you?

I enjoy cooking, golf, and sailing. |

What's a key differentiation of your company?

With a 102-year history, IBM works with clients and companies to leverage information technology to take a smarter approach. The Smarter Planet approach empowers companies, cities, and communities to use the explosion of data to transform their enterprises and institutions through analytics, mobile technology, social business and the cloud. IBM Smarter Commerce (www.rethinkyourcustomer.com) helps companies deliver the right experience to their empowered customers throughout the buy, market, sell and service process through a portfolio of cloud-based, SaaS, and on-premise software solutions.

Why do you choose to participate in the Dean's Leadership Circle?

I had such a great experience in the FEMBA program that I joined the DLC to stay connected to the business school and my classmates. I volunteer on the DLC Marcomm subcommittee to give back to the university and to help the DLC build the connection and sense of community among the business school, alumni, students, and the broader business community. I believe it is important for Merage alumni to feel a sense of fellowship and affiliation to each other and the university, just as the alumni do at any other world-class university.

Please share any 'success stories' that you attribute to you being a member in the Dean's Leadership Circle and/or due to your continued involvement with The Paul Merage School of Business.

The greatest value I get from the DLC is from the real relationships I have formed. By regularly attending DLC events, and by participating on the subcommittee, I have built deeper, more meaningful relationships and friendships that go beyond just a handshake and a business card. The DLC gives me the opportunity to build a network of high-value professionals that will be there when I need it.

What would you like fellow members of the Dean's Leadership Circle to know about you?

What are most important to me are the people and experiences in life. I married my high school sweetheart and best friend. My passions are spending time with my family and friends, hiking, dinner parties, and book club. I was born and raised in Southern California although I lived in England for a year in college, which instilled in me a love of travel and learning about other cultures. I have traveled around Europe and Latin America and have my eye on more destinations including many in our own great country. |

The Annual Insider's View held at Pacific Life |
 |
Visionary and Legacy Seat members of the Dean's Leadership Circle were invited to the Annual Insider's View event on January 23 hosted by Visionary DLC John Waldeck '01 at Pacific Life in Newport Beach. The evening started with a beautiful sunset reception on the top floor terrace overlooking Fashion Island and the ocean towards Catalina. Guests enjoyed beautiful appetizers, refreshments, and socialized on the terrace before taking seats inside the Board Room. Once inside, DLC Founding Chair and Visionary Pamela Adams '98, greeted everyone and introduced John, who shared memories from FEMBA days graduating in 2001, and how he started as a network support analyst in the real estate division at Pacific Life in 1997 and is now Managing Director of the Commercial Mortgage Investments division.

Pam then introduced interim dean Rajeev Tyagi. Professor Tyagi shared current news and announcements, focused on the School's quality programs and recent rise in the rankings. Professor Tyagi thanked DLC members for their role in helping to advance the school. He then gave a wonderful introduction of our featured guest speaker, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Howard D. Gillman. Dr. Gillman was named UCI's provost in July 2013 and, in June 2014, will become Interim Chancellor. Prior to his appointment to UCI, Gillman spent more than 30 years on the campus of USC as faculty, vice provost, chair of political science, and most notably as dean of the Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.

As UCI's Provost, Dr. Gillman is the No. 2 person in campus administration, the campus' chief academic and operating officer and assumes primary responsibility for the planning, development, implementation, assessment and improvement of all academic programs, policies and supporting infrastructure including facilities and information technology. Under the direction of the chancellor, he leads the university's overall strategic planning, develops and implements campus initiatives, works with deans to recruit and retain a diverse and talented faculty, manages the campus wide budget process, and oversees the day to day operations of the campus. In these roles he works closely with the campus' 5 vice chancellors, 12 deans, the University Librarian, CEO of the Medical Center and Academic Senate leadership.

Dr. Gillman gave an overview of the university, how the Merage School collaborates with other schools and the larger University community, and also shared his views and future vision for UC Irvine as a global, preeminent research university. Following his presentation, there was an interactive Q & A session and conversations continued throughout the evening.

We wish to thank John for hosting and allowing us the opportunity to be guests at Pacific Life.

Dr. Gillman's bio can be found here: http://www.provost.uci.edu/about/index.html |
